DECEMBER 2011 MEETING ~ CONTEST WINNERS OF THE YEAR:
Photo contest theme will be to "2011 Best Photo" The members and guests present chose the Photo of the Year from the photos chosen best each month of 2011. Every choice was a super photo making voting quite difficult. It was a real challenge to break a tie, but ultimately, Janice Morris’ puppy was second and Andrew Corfont’s Cinderella’s Castle was the winning Photo of 2011.

Best Photo of 2010 Just Outta Reach© taken by Beverly Yoskovich.
The competition was really tough with all monthly winners being entries for the Club Photo of the Year, but this picture of the cat sneaking upon his prey with the texture of the feeder in the background stole the hearts of most of the folks attending the December meeting/Christmas party.

Bird Photos taken by Cris Hamilton, Club Member.
A few bird shots taken by Cris, the upper row of shots are taken in April when the spring birds have migrated back north; the lower row of photos are in the snow, standing in the yard in full view of the birds (after filling feeders) and some from my window taken earlier.
Using the 400/28 and 500/f4 on the MarkIII. Quot from Jerry, "Of course, it's no slouch activity for Cris to get published on a WQED-associated web site almost weekly!"

"PURPLE MARTINS"
Hi, As some of you know, I keep track of martins. They are the most interesting and useful birds.
At this time of the year (mid-August), they are flocking to get ready to migrate. From local houses
(3 across from our house near the new First Federal Drive-thru), they begin to gather as a good spot
to finalize feeding training for the new birds born this sumer. That happens over the ponds and marsh
at Rohanna's Golf Course from about 6 pm until dark for the next week and one half. While visiting there,
the leave at sunset to go to a "roost" near the big prison. After next week (late-August),
some will begin a journey to the Gulf area, but the rest will go north to Presque Isle on Erie. After
many thousands congregrate there, they will also begin the flight south.
The reason I have burdened
you with this, is that it is really something to see the flock for the next week to ten evenings as
they sit and fly near the parking lot at Rohanna's. Try to make it out there some evening this week
or the first part of next week. The photo here on the right, is the wires this evening. Really, that
is a few compared to the number that will be there by about Friday evening. Jerry Hardy

"GCPC MEMBERS SHINE"
At the July 08 meeting, we learned of the successes of our fellow members again. In the Art/Photography
Contest held by Waynesburg University, Carolyn took second place with her photo art, and Jerry captured
first with his photo of an early morning spider web.
At the Jacktown Fair, Kathy Douglas won two first places with a macro photo and her Bee in Crocus
and one third place award for her Raccoon at Corn Feeder.
Congratulations to these three and to anyone else who has won. Help us learn who wins what so
that we may include their accomplishments in our newsletters. (If you win something, tell us!)

"BILL BAILY ~ CLUB MEMBER PASSES
On July 7, 2008, with a great deal of regret, we learned of the passing of one of our newest members.
Bill Baily had recently joined GCPC, and he helped with the display from the Sheep and Fiber Festival. Those
of us who knew Bill are greatly saddened and will miss him greatly. At the July 22 picnic, we will take a
collection to place something (maybe a library book) in his memory.
